Mr. Blue Sky by the Electric Light Orchestra

This is a fun song with an easy, vibrant guitar solo.  It comes almost entirely from the F Major Pentatonic scale, with the addition of the fourth (the 11th fret, second string).

You can find the chords to Mr. Blue Sky here.

Here is a transcription of the guitar solo to Mr. Blue Sky.  In the third measure, he has a B (second string, twelfth fret).  My ears hear a C there (second string, 13th fret).  When you see notation like 12/ it means to finger the note at the twelfth fret and bend the string, making the note sound higher (it should end up sounding the same as the note two frets up).  The /10 in the last measure means to bend that string up so that it sounds as if it’s at the 11th fret and pluck it at that point, then release it back down.  It sounds similar to striking the note at the 11th fret and then pulling off to the 10th.  Just a different way to get a smooth sound.

Intro to Two-Handed Tapping

Haven’t tried two-handed tapping yet?  Want to explore new tricks with it?  Here is a good introduction to it by Gary Schutt.

Two handed tapping is using the picking hand to fret notes during a guitar solo.

Lipstick Traces

Lipstick Traces by UFO is a great song to work on for both chord arpeggiation and lead playing.  The chords and the melody are very simple, so the heart of the song comes from the style which Michael Schenker puts into it.  Legend has it that he played this song with his feet.

If you don’t have the song, you can download it quickly from Amazon.

Here is the tablature in both GuitarPro and PowerTab formats:
